Arrow Energy backs the next generation of Western Downs farmers

Dalby State High School and Arrow Energy have announced that 10 students have each been awarded $5000 agricultural scholarships to pursue careers in agriculture on the Western Downs.

The $50,000 scholarship program, funded by Arrow Energy, supports students to live and learn at the school’s Bunya Campus, a dedicated agricultural education site offering hands-on learning in farming, animal husbandry and land management.

Arrow Energy Community Officer Jayne Weier said the program, now in its 16th year, reflected Arrow’s commitment to regional communities and to industries that underpin the local economy.

“We know how important agriculture is to families and communities across the Western Downs, and we’re really proud to support students who are passionate about building their future in the industry,” Ms Weier said.

“By supporting local students, we’re investing not only in their education, but in the long-term strength of local farming communities.”

Dalby State High School Deputy Principal Candice Bagley said the scholarships played a critical role in ensuring students from regional and remote areas could access high-quality agricultural education.

“This scholarship program allows our boarders to access an education here at Dalby State High School that many would otherwise have to travel significant distances to receive,” Ms Bagley said.

“It gives students access to a larger high school environment and to the diverse agricultural programs we offer, supporting both ATAR and vocational pathways.”

Ms Bagley said the impact of the program extended beyond the classroom.

“The scholarships ease financial pressure on families and give students confidence and opportunities they might not otherwise have,” she said.

“Our students are developing practical skills, becoming innovative in agriculture, and taking that knowledge back to their communities, which strengthens the industry and rural communities into the future.”

Scholarship recipient Lily Anderson said the opportunity to study at the Bunya Campus had opened doors that would not otherwise have been possible.

“The scholarship is a massive financial aid, and I’m really grateful for it,” Lily said.

“It allows me to stay here and to take part in the innovative agriculture program, with hands-on experience right on our doorstep.”

Fellow recipient Lexie Gibson said the scholarship had helped her pursue both academic and leadership opportunities.

“Receiving the scholarship means I can continue my course of study in agricultural science and accounting, and also take part in leadership opportunities,” Lexie said.

“Learning at the Bunya Campus has given me access to so many opportunities and experiences that are shaping my future in agriculture.”
