Moranbah students perform with Queensland Symphony Orchestra

18 April 2018

Moranbah students will work side by side with some of the state’s leading professional musicians when the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) comes to town on Friday 24 July.

Hands-on instrumental workshops and demonstrations will culminate in a free Community in Concert event made possible by Arrow Energy.

Twelve QSO musicians will travel to Moranbah in July to work with students from Moranbah primary schools, as well as keen musicians from Moranbah State High School.

About 20 students will then take to the stage with the QSO ensemble and a variety of community music acts to perform a free concert for the whole town that evening.

“Arrow looks for innovative partnerships that bring value to the communities where we operate,” Arrow Energy Vice President External Relations and Tenure Management Leisa Elder said.

“We are delighted to partner with Queensland Symphony Orchestra to bring this musical highlight to Moranbah.

“This is a unique opportunity for young Moranbah students and their teachers to learn from some of our state’s best musicians.

“The students’ efforts will be recognised when they perform alongside the orchestra at the Community in Concert event and I encourage locals to come along, show their support and enjoy a great night of music and entertainment.”

Moranbah region music teacher, Matthew Fellows said having the QSO travel all the way to Moranbah to work with local students was of great benefit.

“This is a once-in-a lifetime experience for many of our younger students, who have not been exposed to a full range of orchestral instruments before,” Mr Fellows said.

“Working with QSO’s musicians will improve not only older students’ playing technique but also give them valuable experience performing live alongside seasoned professionals.”

The Community in Concert event will be held on Friday 24 July. Bring your blankets and chairs to Moranbah Town Square from 5.30pm. Performers include music students from Moranbah State High School, 12 Queensland Symphony Orchestra members, local community music group the Moranbah Singers, and local musician Nienke Berghuis. Works performed will range from rousing classic Radetzky March, to the readily recognisable Cantina Band tune from Star Wars.

To celebrate the event, Arrow is offering one lucky winner and up to three friends a VIP experience at the concert. Go to www.arrowenergy.com.au for more details and to enter.

QSO is the state’s largest professional performing arts organisation reaching annual audiences of 1.1 million, and is committed to championing music education in regional Queensland. QSO’s activities in Moranbah are presented by Arrow Energy and supported by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.
