Arrow celebrating NAIDOC with children

04 July 2014

NAIDOC Week events in Dalby, Moranbah, Gladstone and Brisbane will be supported by Arrow Energy staff, as the nation celebrates the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people next week.

“We have built strong relationships with Traditional Owner groups in our areas of operation and want to help them celebrate their culture,” Arrow Community Relations Manager Glenda Viner said.

“As a company, we understand the significance of NAIDOC Week to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people but our interest goes beyond corporate good will.

“We have an international staff and our people from overseas are particularly interested in learning about Australia’s Indigenous cultures. Our own Indigenous staff love sharing their stories and always put on great NAIDOC events in our offices.

“This year, Arrow is also getting involved with NAIDOC events outside our organisation. We’ll have staff helping at events in the towns and cities where we have our main offices.

“We’re pleased to be helping Australia to celebrate its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

Arrow’s NAIDOC Week activities are spread across Queensland:

  • In the flagship Brisbane event, the all-day Musgrave Park Family Fun Day in South Brisbane on 11 July, Arrow and partner Koobara Kindergarten will host the Arrow Energy Kids Corner. Arrow staff will work alongside the kindergarten on children’s activities including art workshops, storytelling, games and wildlife handling.
  • In Gladstone, Arrow and the Gladstone City Library will host an art, craft and storytelling day for local children on Tuesday [8 July], distributing a selection of Indigenous-themed children’s books to participants on the day. Arrow has also sponsored a table at tonight’s NAIDOC Week Ball, with Elders attending as Arrow’s guests.
  • In Dalby, Arrow and the Western Downs Library will host a reading session for pre-Year 3 students on Thursday [10 July], reading from Indigenous children’s books. Sets of the books will be distributed to local libraries and schools.
  • In Moranbah, Arrow has organised a representative of the region’s Traditional Owners, the Barada Barna people, to host storytelling sessions at the town’s state schools and distribute a selection of Indigenous themed children’s books to participants. The activities will occur 21-25 July, after school resumes for term 3.

NAIDOC Week runs from 6-13 July.
