Arrow celebrates NAIDOC Week 2015

18 April 2018

NAIDOC Week events in Dalby, Moranbah and Brisbane will be supported by Arrow Energy, as the nation celebrates the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

NAIDOC Week begins next week and Arrow’s involvement will extend from story-telling events and community fun days to classroom education.

“We’re hoping that the wider community will join us in these events, have some fun and learn more about Australia’s Indigenous history,” Arrow Energy Vice President External Relations and Tenure Management Leisa Elder said.

“Our Indigenous staff members are sharing their culture with the rest of Arrow’s staff and we want to be involved in bringing the same experience to the wider community,

“We’ve partnered with community groups across our areas of operation to deliver events that celebrate the culture and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise their contribution to the country.

“As a company, we understand the significance of NAIDOC Week to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

The theme for this year’s National NAIDOC Week celebrations is We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate, focussing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ strong connection to land and sea.

“Arrow operates across different regions in Queensland, and in each area, we work with the Traditional Owners, respecting their histories and unique connection to the land and resources,” Ms Elder said.

Arrow’s NAIDOC Week activities are spread across Queensland:

  • In Dalby, Arrow has partnered with Dalby PCYC to support its NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day on Sunday 5 July. The day will be hosted by locals Elders and include Indigenous entertainment, food stalls, arts and crafts, storytelling and a movie preview.

  • In Moranbah, Arrow has partnered with Moranbah State School and Moranbah East State School to host a NAIDOC week celebration. Students from prep to Year 6 will take part in interactive Indigenous awareness sessions. The sessions will occur on 21 August, after school resumes for Term 3.

  • In Brisbane, Arrow supported NAIDOC Week celebrations at Zillmere State School with more than 120 children taking part in the cultural event. Students from Geebung State School and Geebung Special School joined the celebrations, facilitated by Jabiru Youth and Children’s Services. The children took part in Indigenous-story telling, fire making, boomerang throwing and Indigenous dancing and learnt about yarning circles and the importance of the environment.

NAIDOC Week runs from 5-12 July.
