Arrow boost for Mundubbera youngsters

19 December 2013

Mundubbera Kindergarten’s remaining flood-damaged playground area is to be upgraded, thanks to a grant from Arrow Energy.

Mundubbera Kindergarten Association Grants Coordinator Marisa Young said the whole town suffered in the 2013 floods.

“Almost the whole of our outdoor area was barricaded off from play,” Ms Young said.

“This left a very small area of outdoor play for the children which, in turn, was quite stressful on staff and children alike. The natural groundcover did not cope with all the use.

“We will cover the area with soft fall as it would be more resilient. Soft fall will make it a safe outdoor education area, along with lifting spirits and provide excitement for the children.

“Many families still suffering from the floods rely strongly on the kindergarten for support for themselves and children, so this will be a very positive step towards having a more enjoyable and visually appealing play area for the children.”

Aside from the soft fall surface, Arrow funding will provide a slide.

Arrow Community Relations Manager Glenda Viner said the company would cover the costs from its Brighter Futures community investment fund.

“Arrow has a strong focus on helping communities to build their educational capacity,” Ms Viner said.

“Physical activity is a key component of children’s learning, and Mundubbera’s youngsters were missing out because of a natural disaster.

“As a not-for-profit organisation, the kindergarten wasn’t in a position to outlay the money to rejuvenate this area, and I am pleased Arrow has been able to assist.

“Mundubbera Kindergarten is an integral part of the region and supports many families from very diverse demographic and cultural backgrounds, so Arrow sees this as a wise investment in the area’s future.”

Brighter Futures supports local, not-for-profit groups on projects that build community capacity in health, safety, education and environmental awareness. This year, Arrow invested more than $4.6 million in 117 community projects across the state.
