Dalby expo to bring health discussion

30 September 2019

With keynote talks ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to heart disease, the expo aims to help people live longer and reduce the incidence of chronic and major disease.

“The project is about people taking up the idea their health is in their hands and saving lives from such health issues as heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dalby Rotary Treasurer Peter Wylie.

“The objective is to encourage active participation in healthier eating and lifestyles and the prevention of disease.

“The club started on a journey to investigate the need for more aged care facilities in Dalby. But what if Alzheimer’s – a major need for aged care – could be prevented or progress slowed in the early stages?

“We are advised this may be possible and this expo is a step in this direction, but also will examine and encourage many other aspects of diet, disease prevention and healthier lifestyles.”

Dalby Health Expo will be held on October 19 at PCYC Dalby, from 9.30am to 4.30pm, with the keynote talks at 10am and repeated at 2pm. Speakers include Dr Rolf Gomes, founder of the Heart of Australia mobile medical clinic which brings city-level specialist medicine to regional Queensland.

Leisa Elder, Arrow Energy’s Vice President External Relations and Tenure Management, said the company saw great value in creating a culture of health.

“Arrow is the proud foundation partner of the Heart of Australia mobile medical specialist service, which is making great inroads into the wellbeing of people in regional Queensland,” Ms Elder said.

“So, supporting Dalby Rotary’s health expo was a logical extension.

“With significant numbers of staff based in the Surat and Bowen basins, who work away from population centres, Arrow is very aware of the importance of helping people proactively work on their own health.”

Arrow’s support for the Dalby Health Expo has come from its Brighter Futures community investment program, which assists local organisations with health and safety, education and environmental activities.

Other groups to receive Brighter Futures funding in this round include:

  • Dalby Beck Street Kindergarten, for its fund-raising Spring Soiree on October 26, with Dame Quentin Bryce as guest speaker.
  • Dalby and District Silver Band, for licensed sheet music for performances at Dalby’s Australia Day and Anzac day celebrations, and a trivia night fund-raiser for the PCYC Club.
  • Chinchilla Historical Society, for next year’s official opening of the Fire Tower Interpretative Centre.

Arrow’s Brighter Futures has contributed more than $32 million to community projects across Queensland since 2011.
