Dalby volunteers in running for state award

14 October 2014

The mentors behind Dalby PCYC’s Braking the Cycle program are finalists in the Queensland Regional Achievement & Community Awards.

The mentor group has been short-listed for the Prime Super Community of the Year Award.

Braking the Cycle Dalby, partnered by Arrow Energy, is a driver training program run by the town’s PCYC that uses community volunteers to mentor young people towards their vehicle licences.

“We are immensely proud of Braking the Cycle and the benefits it is bringing to Dalby’s young people,” said Arrow Community Relations Manager Glenda Viner.

“Gaining a licence is a step towards a job and financial independence.

“The program has been running in Dalby for a year now and 30 learners have signed up.

“Thirteen of them now have their licences and, of the 13 licences, seven have either gained employment or remained in their jobs.

“With 18 training mentors on reaching the finals of these awards, and our partners, PCYC Dalby, as well.”

The Regional Achievement & Community Awards for Queensland recognise rural and regional achievers.

The Super Community of the Year category is for community groups that “share a strong commercial sense of community spirit, which plays a vital role in enhancing the social, economic, commercial and environmental prosperity of their region.”

Finalists in the Super Community of the Year category are: Dalby PCYC Volunteer Mentors; The Miles District Hospital Auxiliary Inc; and the Toowoomba Hospice.

Judging was conducted on 2 October and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in Caloundra on 8 November.
