Arrow report shows community support

15 May 2014

Arrow invested more than $4.6 million in 117 community projects across Queensland last year, as detailed in Arrow’s latest annual community investment report.

The investment, made under Arrow’s Brighter Futures program, ranged from large commitments towards biodiversity projects and Indigenous education, to replacing safety equipment at a junior soccer club.

Arrow’s community investment was headlined by Arrow’s continuing contribution to the Queensland coal seam gas companies-funded Surat Basin Gas Industry Aeromedical Service.

Since 2011, this service has minimised industry impacts on community medical services flying more than 200 flying hours and more than 100 retrieval missions for Surat Basin community members.

“Arrow’s Brighter Futures program is about supporting sustainable development of communities and having an impact at a local level,” CEO Andrew Faulkner said.

“I’m proud of the extent of Arrow’s support to these communities but also of the results.

“Our community investment focus is on three key values – health and safety, education and the environment – which has helped children and adults achieve great things for schools, libraries, sports bodies, service groups and towns.”

Arrow’s 2013 Brighter Futures investment was distributed to 45 projects in the Surat Basin, 25 in the Bowen Basin, 15 in Gladstone, 17 in Brisbane, seven statewide and eight in other parts of Queensland.

Among Arrow’s 2013 Brighter Futures achievements were:

  • Brisbane Broncos players toured nine Surat Basin schools to promote reading and healthy lifestyles to more than 700 students, and held a fan day in Dalby.
  • Arrow has extended its partnership with the Condamine Alliance, to restore native fish habitat on the Condamine River.
  • Moranbah’s only after-school childcare facility is helping to deliver vocational training to senior students at Moranbah State High School, as well as addressing a chronic shortage of structured care for more junior school children.
  • The Queensland Police Citizens Youth Club’s award-winning driver education program, Braking the Cycle, was launched in the Western Downs in November helping local learner drivers gain their licences.
  • Indigenous education was boosted with 25 tertiary scholarships in six universities, 69 Queensland high school bursaries, three scholarships to elite boarding schools and places at science camps for more than 100 regional students.
  • Arrow and State Library of Queensland launched a partnership to bring multi-literacy programs to the Western Downs.
  • Arrow’s 2013 Brighter Futures’ investment was a significant increase on 2012 ($3.7 million to 92 organisations) and 2011 ($1.25 million to 70 organisations).
