Hilary graduated with a first class Masters of Arts in Engineering Science from Oxford University in 1987, before starting her career with Shell in the same year.

From her first role in the UK's Stanlow manufacturing complex, Hilary became the maintenance manager for the crude distillation and primary processing area, and then the senior shutdown manager for various refinery and chemical plant units. Since 1994 she has worked on various LNG projects, during which time she has been involved in a number of areas including FEED design projects, feasibility studies and mechanical construction activities in countries such as Nigeria, Oman, Russia and the UK.

Most recently, Hilary was the LNG Construction Manager at Sakhalin Island, Russia, and as the General Manager of Technical Implementation for Iraq South Gas.
