Drought conditions are severely affecting communities throughout regional Queensland and other parts of Australia. Arrow Energy has responded to this threat with the development of a reverse osmosis facility which treats coal seam gas water for crop irrigation.

The mobile facility is a world first and located in Arrow's Tipton West coal seam gas field, 20 minutes south of Dalby. The facility desalinates 1.5 megalitres of saline water extracted from coal seams as part of the gas production process to create fresh water. What's more, this process is powered by coal seam gas.

The water is now being used by a centre pivot irrigation system to irrigate 80 hectares of broadleaf crops. If this trial proves successful, the company expects to deploy this technology throughout its operations. There are more opportunities to use this water beneficially including industrial use, reforestation and supplementing town water supplies.
